For me the following works::

  Binomial Expansion
    The expansion in accordance with the *Binomial
    Theorem* of some power of a *binomial* expression. 
    For example, the binomial expansion of |(x+a)^3| is

    .. raw:: latex

       $$x^3 + 3x^2a + 3xa^2 + a^3,$$

    where the *binomial coefficients* are given by 
    *Pascal's triangle*.

    .. |(x+a)^3| raw:: latex

       $(x+a)^3$
