You’re a star!  It didn’t jump back into life exactly the way you describe, but it is clearly a socket problem because wiggling the plug around a bit brought it back from the dead.  I bought the radio second hand only a few weeks ago and it may be that it had spent a lot of its life plugged into 12v so the little springy connector was somewhat deformed.  I will change the socket when necessary, but for now it’s all working and I shall leave it alone.  Many thanks for pointing me in the right direction.  I had taken the whole thing apart in the hunt for fuses which may have blown.  Thankfully, after putting it all back together it’s still working!!

Thanks too to other folks for the other suggestions which came my way.

Yo!

I have also seen this happen though VERY rarely.

I didn't even need to go to the trouble of removing the battery.

I just plugged the charger back into the rig, flicked it on to check
there was still a connection (which there was!) nocked the mains back
off and unplugged it again.

Hey Presto! It was fine.  It's happened maybe 2 or 3 times in as many
years so I don't think it's TOO serious but is probably the onset of
the more serious busted socket syndrome.

If it gives out all together I'll open it up.  If not I'll leave well
alone coz the last time I repaired a handy it self destructed upon
reassembly!
