My TH-F7e was replaced under warranty - the antenna
too.  The Kenwood engineer didn't say what was found
but inferred that it doesn't take much to cause
(expensive) PA failure. 
"Standard" antennas are not wide band and don't always
present a good load near the edges of bands they're
designed for.  An antenna specific to the frequency
you intend has always been as good advice as staying
within licence conditions
(at any power setting).

It's still a good radio for monitoring what's going on
:-)
