Brian,
The .fx files are in simple ASCII text format. You can read them
with any word processor. However, the data is in a radio CAT-like
format. It is simply a file of the ASCII command responses from the
radio with a little manipulation for the file.

    However...

If you look in the files section of this group (Software folder >
K9DCI's CAT SHEET & CAT Programming Reference), you will see my Excel
spreadsheet which does the memory upload and download. You can paste
your data into my spreadsheet (appropriatly watching the locations of
the data) and not worry about the .fx files.
My sheets allow abbreviating some parameters and auto corrects
some (have versions for the IC706MkIIG, TS-2000, TH-F6/7 and TM-D700).
It also does Click-to-Tune [click on a row to tune he radio] and
Click-to-read [Click to save the radio freq/Mode in the sheet with a
click - for click-to-tune later).

While round-a-bout, you could load the radio memories from my
sheet, then use the MCP to grab the radio to save the .fx file.
In any case, you need to either buy or build an RS232 to TTL
convertor for the Radio. My reference doc (in the FIles area) has a
circuit. I built mine into the DB9 connector shell and it needs no
external power, just plug it into the Serial port and radio.

I am currently investigating adding the ability to read/write .fx
format files with my spreadsheet.
