I recently purchased a Kenwood TH-F7E.

Overall appearance/feel was good – except for the volume/tuning
control – feels sloppy.

The standard aerial leaves a lot to de desired.

My local 2m repeater is easily accessible – with a 5-watt handset.
But the TH-F7E just couldn't make it!

I connected the unit to my base antenna and got a good response - but
that's not why I bought a handheld.

I have since purchased an after market antenna – Diamond RH775 –
2m/70cm tx/rx with 120/150/300/450/800/900 MHz rx. It is a bnc fitting
so I have used a bnc/sma adapter.

WOW what a difference – radio tx'd into the repeater no problems.

So I did a few tests on simplex with another ham approximately 2kms
north from my test position.
The area from my location is flat bushland for approx. 1.5kms then
housing/buildings for the last 500 metres or so. Receiving
antenna/rig – FT857 (with FT meter) with a Comet 2m/70cm/6m triband
approx. 7mtrs high.

Results:
With original rubber ducky antenna:
EL power setting - carrier only received – no voice heard.
L power setting – S4 – lots of back ground noise.
H power setting – S8/S9 – less noise – readable.

With Diamond RH775
EL power setting - S4 – readable.
L power setting – S8/S9 – good signal & clear audio.
H power setting – S9/60+ – no problems.

What would I changed in an TH-F7E?
Maybe a dual function (or menu select) for the tuning control -
tuning/volume.
The volume control "ring" is a bit fiddly for my fat fingers!

Mark.
