Understand that YOU hold a GMRS license.  That is good for family in the immediate household.  You cannot legally hand a radio to a buddy/friend and have them use your license.  By FCC regulation you may only communicate with your immediate family and/or other licencees.  It does get sticky.  That doesn’t mean you can’t use the FRS frequencies with just anybody at their lower power levels, but you probably already knew that.

Johathan (and everyone else who has chimed in...)

I think i understand what you were talking about the license.  no i have not taken any type of test, but i do have the GMRS license.  i do not know what the difference is.  is there more that i need to go through before i am officially official?  i was under the assumption that i needed the license from the FCC and that was it.  i guess i should never assume. and i did not know about the FRN number being public.  heck i don't even know what it is...

I did pick up 4 Cobra brans LI-7200's that have a "25 mile" range of course we all know that is on a calm lake with the wind... hahaha.  these will be the main radios that i will be using between cars and the moto driver.  it looked to be the best overall radio with the best functions that would suit my needs.  (i will be able to hook up a helmet speaker and boom mic to it if the kenwood option doesn't happen (which it is looking more and more like it won't)  the officials radios are all "official"  the race rents probably 100 of them from a local radio supplier and the race takes care of the licenses for them all.  i guess that i could just have one of these radios in the car and have them relay any information to me via the Cobra.  My problem is, i am a control freak and i want all information going through me.  this is my program and my reputation and we are dealing with professional cyclists.  i just hate to give up information flow.  i do not want 2 radios on me, it is too much.  i have done it before and it just gets in the way.  i have to be able to hoe off the moto in a split second and run up to the racer and service them in a fraction of a second, then get back on the bike.  i already have tools with me and a couple of wheels that i am hanging onto,so another piece of equipment is just too cumbersome.

again thank you for all of your info.  there is a ton that i guess i do not understand, like what RACES is and well just about everything...  do i need to take a test un order to use the GMRS band on my Cobras?

thanks everybody.  i dodn't mean to come out with my guns firing saying that i HAVE to do it this way...  but really thanks for all of your help

Sorry if I misstated. What I meant was I can not find an active
amateur radio license. I saw the GMRS. Also, Sean, your FRN is public
(the FCC ULS database shows it on any license that you hold.)

I still think that a GMRS radio (type accepted) would be in your best
interest.

Also, the officials' band, if using anything other than GMRS, and
unlicensed bands, (such as MURS), will likely also require a license
OR type accepted transmitter.

My 2 cents: Instead of a $300 invitation for trouble, grab a GMRS
radio at Wal-Mart (or similar store) and some sort of receiver for the
other band. Scanners run under $ 100 bucks at Wal-Mart as do GMRS
radios at 5 W.

I like the ARES or local ham club idea suggested as well but, if you
need to directly communicate, try a scanner and GMRS handheld combo.

Best Regards,

Jon, K4ETC

i am trying to do. I am not sure why my license does not come up on
the FCC website. I have paid $85 for my license. With my FCC radio
station authorization letter in hand with a call sign that states
WQIK399. i also have my FRN # but i probably should not publicize
that. the effective date is 03-04-2008 with an expiration of
03-04-2013. i do not know how else to prove that i am not some "made
up call sign type" that some are claiming i am. anyway......
