You have a GMRS license. Nothing more, nothing less. To use the TH-F6A (or any other amateur radio device) in the way it was intended, you need an *amateur radio* license. That does require taking a test. But since at this point it doesn't sound like the race uses amateur radio at all, I'm not sure as that would be any advantage to you. I'm not sure as there is any radio that can by legally used the way you want. The race officials are likely on a business band. I'm not sure as there are any radios that are type accepted (and therefor legal) for both business and GMRS. You might try directly approaching the company that handles the race communication to see what they can do. After all, the race is operating under their license, so they are going to get picky about what you use on their frequencies. A scanner will allow you listen to what is said, but I don't know of any legal GMRS/Scanner radios out there. ------------------------------------ |
