It's refreshing. Some info that might help: Hams (despite the word amateur) are professional communicators who take the craft seriously. Some join groups that specialize in emergency operations and prepare for emergencies by operating the communications at local non-emergency events like marathons and bike races. It is a lot of fun for the hams as well as good practice to do so. If your local race organizers contact your local ARES or RACES group you will probably find that all of the communications at the race will be handled by hams who shadow all of the key players. I have omitted many details but I think you get the point. In the meantime I would stick to a scanner in one ear and a GMRS in the other all for under $100 used or $200 new. No broken laws, no broken egos and if you keep your butt firmly planted to the motorcycle no broken bones...
