What frequency band are the officials on? If it's also UHF, you might
consider a professional grade UHF HT.

In your situation, I think I'd want two radios. Having two
frequencies in one ear piece drives me batty. I can't separate the
conversations. With two radios, I put one radio in each ear and I can
keep things separate. Plus I know when I grab a mic that I'm replying
to the correct conversation. (Some dual-band radios support putting
different side in different ears, but the TH-F6A isn't one of them.
Both "bands" will end up mixed into a single channel.)

I've done public service events with a HT and a scanner on my belt.
It didn't bother me at all.

It sounds like you are not licensed as a Radio Amateur (ham). For
$300 I think there are better choices then the TH-F6A to do what you
need.

As for getting caught - all it takes is someone who doesn't like what
you are doing and reports you to the feds. In competitive situation
like a race, I'd think there's no shortage of people who would love to
point out any wrongdoing.
