Jonathan,
First off thank you. thank you for not being condasending to
what i am trying to do. I am not sure why my license does not come up on
the FCC website. I have paid $85 for my license. With my FCC
radio station authorization letter in hand with a call sign that
states WQIK399. i also have my FRN # but i probably should not
publicize that. the effective date is 03-04-2008 with an expiration of
03-04-2013. i do not know how else to prove that i am not some "made up
call sign type" that some are claiming i am. anyway......
He is right, he does have a GMRS
License.
the reason that i am trying to accomplish this is the type
of service that i provide during some professional and amateur bicycle
races. I provide something called "Neutral Support" during the
race. Basically think of it as a team mechanic that follows the race in
a car through the country and cities. well i am not team affiliated, i
am "Neutral" and am there to provide support to all racers regardless of
what team they are racing for. If the racer had a mechanical problem
e.g. flat tire or crash we are there to fix them as fast as possible in order
for them to complete the race.
Then why not talk to a local ARES group or
RACES group? Our RACES group is doing a couple events this year. It gives them
the practice in setting up their equipment and using APRS to report
positions.
well now that you know WHAT i am doing, i am sure that you
want to know WHY i need these bands available. well to put it plainly
$$. my company does not have the $$ to provide good radios
(Kenwoods')for the entire crew 5-6 people. We are not the only ones on
radios. These races have licensed officials that officiate the races
during the races. They are always on a licensed frequency
band. We need to be able to hear what they are saying because sometimes
they communicate with us "neutral support" but we also need to be able to talk
to each other without bothering the officials. we need to be
able to basically have our own freq.
And you have money for the big fines if
caught? If it is under YOUR license, YOU will be the one paying the
fines!
I am the ringleader of the show, i want to be able to
communicate to both my guys and the officials when needed, and this radio
seems to be the answer. i will honestly be in this scenario only a
handful of times a year (if that).
I would HIGHLY reccommend that you get one
of the officials radios and transfer messages from the officials to your team.
Again, the ARES or RACES groups would probably like the practice.
so i hope this helps explain why i am trying to do what i am
trying to do. other than caring 2 radios (one
cobra GMRS type and one that the officials communicate on) i don't
know how to accomplish this. and 2 radios just dosen't work. i
have done it before and it is too cumbersome. During the race i
am actually riding on the back of a motorcycle waiting for some
action. more radios than are really needed just weigh me
down.
Let's see.... a little weight versus fines
and possibly jail time.... hmmm.
i don't know am i completly nuts for trying to do this
off of this radio? again i have not purchased it yet but i was planning
on doing it soon.
You know, if the mod is not successful,
you just ruined a $300 radio (back to the cost thing again).
help me if you can
also please help my ignorance how would i get caught doing
this? not that i do not believe that i COULD get caught because anything
is defiantly possible i am not niaeve, but really how does one get caught
doing this?
Local police departments as well as State
police are being trained to watch out for more stuff since 9/11. I am not
saying that they WILL catch you, but somebody else could notice and say
something.
Why not find a local Amateur club, take a
class and get your Amateur license? It takes $14 and a test. You could even
study online just look up Amateur Radio Testing in Google for a testing site
in your area.
www.w5yi.com and
www.arrl.org are two of the major VEC's. Do not
take a chance on getting caught. Do it legal, it is MUCH cheaper in the long
run. Besides, once a licensed Amatuer, you will see what we mean about this
hobby.
Good Luck,
Gary
thanks!
