"Blowing the final" refers to putting constant
stress on the final transistor to the point where the radio shuts the power
down. Repeated usage in this fashion can do permanent damage to the final in the
radio.
The antennas for the handhelds are not very good
even in the ham bands. If you decide to operate in the GMRS bands, you might be
subjecting the radio to REAL high SWR's. If the radio gets real hot after
transmitting for a while that is a good clue.
