My recollection, all these years later, is that the latter is 
approximately the case: it parallels (or was originally intended to 
parallel) the initially-do and finally-do slots in mk-defsystem (3.x). 
I don't remember ever having actually used it, and with hindsight 
certainly ought to have applied YAGNI.
