The correct answer is:

Try to look for how the module is loaded in the kernel. If it is
loaded with the option autocreate=sta, then you will have problems,
almost sure your problem is this.

I would try this:

Remove the modules (ath_pci only first, if not working remove all)
Insert the modules again, with this option being passed
(autocreate=none) when you insert ath_pci. Try to insert with insmod,
i think using this command your system will not look for extra options
in a obscure configuration file.

Then run your commands.
