You still didn't demonstrate that you didn't have an interface in
managed mode at that point.  Considering that you have the problem, it
should be checked.  Maybe there are some scripts running in the
background that create it.

I tried loading ath_pci with "autocreate=none", and I still cannot
reproduce your problem by executing exactly the same commands as you
have posted.  I also tried loading ath_pci with no parameters, removing
ath0 and following your commands.  It still worked.
