I was a bit googl'ing around because I really wondered about a
possibility to use WPA without using wpa_supplicant. I got very few
hits for "iwpriv ath0 wpa 1". The most informative Mail:

clearly indicates that those iwprivs might only be meant as a userspace
API for more sophisticated programs than a shell script. Maybe someone
else can provide more info.
