Hello everyone,

I have a very basic query but which iam very confused about.

Whats the difference between Wifi0 and ath0 :(

I understand that ath0 is a virtual AP we create on the exsiting Wifi0 physical interface. Meaning that we can have many athx (ath0, ath1, ath2 etc) on the same physical interface wifi0.

My queries are as below:

1. In case i dont want to have any virtual AP (ath0) can i use the Wifi0 itself? cause i find that iwconfig and the other wireless tools use ath0 (VAP) to configure.

2. how many virtual AP can i create on my Wifi0? is it 64?

3. On one physical interface Wifi0, Can i have virtual AP (VAP) having different ESSID, Different channels or differnet rates/modes(a/b/g)? Cause physically the radio/phy used would be one wifi0 right?

4. Iam using Wireshark to capture packets putting my Wifi device in monitor mode. can i capture packets in Wifi0 interface or Do i have to use Ath0 interface? What would be the difference?

Please help.

Regards
Queenie
