Subject: Re: Does Madwifi use short preamble in 802.11b, mode?
Newsgroups: gmane.linux.drivers.madwifi.devel

The Atheros uses the long preamble for 1 Mbps and the short preamble for
2,5 and 11 Mbps (verified through sniffing
with tcpdump).
For the difference at MAC layer among the difference card see
i.e. A. Di Stefano, et al., ”On the Fidelity of IEEE 802.11commercial
cards,”. WICON 2005
Here you can see that the different vendor not always uses a 802.11 MAC
compliant
but uses different strategies to improve the performance, like a shorter
CWmin.
