Ark Linux 1.0 alpha 7 release notes
===================================

1. Ark Linux
============

1.1. Important changes since alpha 6
====================================

1.1.1. Important updates
------------------------
- XFree86 (the graphics drivers) has been updated to version 4.3.0, with updated
  drivers for SiS and S3 Savage chips.
- KDE (the user interface) has been updated to a version closely resembling
  the upcoming 3.1.1 release.
- glibc (a set of common functions used by every application) has been updated
  to version 2.3.2 - fixing, among other things, the crashes when starting
  Qt designer on some machines.
- The xine media player has been updated to 1.0 beta 8.
- The kernel has been updated to 2.4.21-pre5-ac2 with many additional patches
  to add drivers and to improve the performance of the system.
- Improved XCursor support (colored, transparents and shadowed cursors)
- Improved Resize and Rotate (RandR) support under KDE. It is now possible
  to resize the screen resolution without restarting XFree86.
- For better consistancy, the Gtk/Gnome libraries and packages has been
  renamed. The legacy 1.x versions are now called <name>1 (such as
  glib -> glib1), while the 2.x version is considered the main package
  (glib2 -> glib).
  An extra plus of this change is that apt users will get the what's expected
  when they type "apt-get source glib" - the source to the current version.

1.1.2. Additions
----------------
- Full support for the ALSA sound system has been added, providing drivers for
  additional sound cards.
- USB mouse support has been added to the installer
- Support code for i810 based graphics cards has been added to the installer.
  Since no contributor has access to this type of hardware, this feature is
  completely untested; please let us know whether or not it works.

1.1.3. Removals
---------------
- The mplayer media player has been moved to Ark Extra Software.
- The wine windows emulator has been moved to Ark Extra Software.

1.2. Known problems
===================
- The partitioning and boot manager problems seen by some people in alpha 6
  have not been addressed. The problem is unlikely to show up unless you
  are using a very complex partition layout.
