Turns out I'd actually fixed the main problem in the newer Xapian
release I've just installed, so you can now specify "author:" and
"group:" before terms in your query (handy if you're using the
Firefox search plugin, for example).
Some examples:
penny stock -group:gmane.mail.spam.*
gnus author:larsi <at> gnus.org
changing name author:john author:smith
I've also added a "short url for this search" link to the (top right) of
the search results. This is generally significantly shorter than the
URL of the results page.
You can right-click and choose "Copy Link Location" (with Firefox - I
suspect there's something similar in other browsers) and then paste this
into emails and webpages
