I would feel better if there was some statement somewhere, from anyone
(but ideally from Adobe), about the basis on which they concluded the
fonts are free.  As I said, the license is contradictory.

Many if not all "free" distributions actually include various nonfree
packages.  Merely being part of some random distribution doesn't allow
one to conclude it is free.  Debian is probably the best in this regard.
