Subject: Points are like money? Newsgroups: gmane.comp.programming.extreme-programming Date: 2005-12-11 02:21:43 GMT (2 years, 51 weeks, 1 day, 13 hours and 34 minutes ago) It's a common complaint when dealing with a velocity measured in arbitrary units (points, pomodori, gummi bears) that they're hard to understand. and I've always had trouble explaining them to people in a way that they'll relax and run with them for a while. It just occurred to me that people deal with a similar arbitrary measure all the time: money. What's a dollar worth? Since we abandoned the gold standard, who knows! It's worth whatever you can buy for a dollar. But nobody really minds or even notices except when they visit a foreign country. Next I explain points, I'll see if I can sell them as the foreign currency in Developerland. It doesn't matter what they are, as long as they are more or less consistent in value, and as long as we can calculate the exchange rate into currencies we care about for schedules and budgets: hours and dollars.
