Correct, "Australia" is a proper name.  As is say "China"  "Ian" 
"John"  "Japan" etc.

In contrast, if China was called "The United States of Asia," and had 
no proper name, that would be ... stupid.

(It is inconceivable that anyone is so silly they fail to understand this.)
