Subject: Stable ntfs-3g-1.416 released

Hello,

The driving force of the ntfs-3g development is to provide maximum
reliability, and is led by user feedbacks to solve potential problems,
implement new features. This release isn't different.

One of the most frequently reported issues was when mount is denied
because the NTFS journal file is unclean. For example when Windows crashes.

Solution could be to boot Windows or plug the disk to another one but this
is not always possible, for instance if Windows stopped booting and another

Windows is not available. Linux is often used for recovery and rescue
purposes in such situations. Ntfsfix can be used to clean the journal file
but some distributions ship too old version which don't work, moreover
stable ntfsfix releases make Vista unbootable. Hence ntfs-3g will do the
needed work, Vista safe, if the --force option is used.

There were several mysterious bug reports which turned out to be due to
ntfs-3g being used accidently with old libntfs-3g. This is dangerous
because one could believe that she is using the latest release which is not

entirely true. So the library is versioned from now on and ntfs-3g won't
start if there is an incompatible mismatch with the library.

This release also fixes some of the portability problems non-Linux users
most often noted.

Major visible changes since the last stable release:

o new: read-write mount is supported using the "force" mount option if
          the logfile is unclean
  o new: libntfs-3g is versioned
o fix: default ownership of files weren't always set to the mounting
user
o fix: mount was denied if $MFTMirr had non-standard size
o fix: catch and deny all junction/reparse point write operations
  o fix: multiply -o options weren't allowed (FreeBSD's mount(8) requires)
o fix: don't try to run Linux specific code on non-Linux OSes

Change since the 1.411-RC test release:

o fix: parsing of the first mount option could fail in 1.411-RC

Contributors to this release were Laszlo Dvornik, Dmitri Tarasov, Karim
Abou-Moustafa, Dominique L Bouix, Stacman, Miklos Szeredi, Jochen Schmitt,

Kind regards,
		Szaka
