Subject: Static X Newsgroups: gmane.comp.autopackage.devel Date: 2007-05-10 05:14:46 GMT (1 year, 34 weeks, 4 days, 14 hours and 19 minutes ago) Hi All, Do we really need X linked statically anymore? Are there any distros that don't ship dynamic copies? By requiring static X, we're basically requiring GLIBC_2.3 or 2.4 (depending on what's on the system). I've tried building copies with apbuild, but building Xorg isn't apparently an easy task. I tried grabbing some old libraries out of Slack 8.1 (the last one to come with GLIBC 2.2), but Qt wouldn't compile because XRRSelectInput() and XRRUpdateConfiguration() are missing from xfree86 4.2.1. I don't think the approach of stealing libs from older systems will work--they're too old. I think that dynamically linking X by default would probably be a good idea... Also, what about bumping up to allows GLIBC_2.3 symbols? It was released way back in late 2002. While admittedly breaking support for older distros is something to be avoided--does any software released today even work on 5 year old distros (Gnome 1.x, KDE 2.x)?
